Kelvin Low, Senior Director of Marketing at Samsung Semiconductor Division, will attend today a FD-SOI workshop organized by the SOI Consortium, in San Francisco.
This meeting will be aimed to put the foundations for a fruitful partnership between the foundries using this technology (ST Microelectronics, Samsung and GlobaFoundries) and the fabless companies that can reap great benefit, if they decide to use it, as Kelvin himself wrote on 28nm: "This Particular version of FD-SOI delivers a nice balance between higher performances with low power consumption, well suitable for Mobile, Consumer Electronics and IT Infrastructural Applications". One of the great advantages of the FD-SOI processes over FinFET is the possibility to convert the existing Bulk production lines with a limited expense, ensuring a considerable improvement of production. It is not surprising, then, that an adaptation of FD-SOI on older 40nm and 65nm nodes is currently being studied.
Moreover, we have recently written how the sales of FD-SOI wafer, by Soitec and Shin-Etsu, are improving day by day, a clear sign that the demand for products using the FD-SOI technology is growing rapidly.
The Internet of Things is about to become the new Eldorado, and since most of the products that are part of this category will have to ensure a high autonomy of use, great economy and good performance, the decision to focus on FD-SOI seems almost mandatory.
The Twitter page of Samsung Semiconductor, regarding this matter, shows al almost infinite post count.
You can imagine, at this point, that Samsung in the coming weeks will make an important announcement regarding the signing of an important contract.
