Imagination Technology negli ultimi anni sta spingendo fortemente sull’utilizzo dell’architettura MIPS anche nel mercato Enterprise, come ci è stato confermato in questa intervista a Jen Bernier, VP of Software Engineering Division, ed Alexandru Voica, Senior Technology Marketing Specialist.
Imagination ha così deciso di supportare lo sviluppo di Debian su architettura MIPS, donando diverse piattaforme complete SDNA-7130 (Software Defined Network Appliance), dotate dei recenti SoC Cavium OCTEON III basati su uArch MIPS64.
Ian Oliver, VP of developer tools presso Imagination, ha affermato: “The new devices from Rhino Labs represent an important part of Imagination’s commitment to offer Debian developers free access to a wide range of 32- and 64-bit MIPS-based platforms. We encourage the community to take advantage of the new hardware available and join us in the quest to provide the latest features of the 32- and 64-bit MIPS architecture to the widest possible range of Debian users”.
Va ricordato che Debian è la grande rivale di Red Hat in ambito Enterprise, e che è l’unica delle due a sviluppare ancora su ISA MIPS. Si è trattato, per Imagination, di una mossa obbligata, in quanto Red Hat sta portando avanti progetti quasi esclusivamente per x86 e ARM.
