L'Italia vista da...

Take care on public transport and in crowded areas in Rome, especially around the main railway station ‘Termini’ and on the number 64 bus, which goes to and from St Peter’s Square.

Be particularly vigilant on trains to and from the main airports in Italy (especially Fiumicino airport) and when unloading your baggage from trains and coaches.
Cars, at rest stops and motorway service stations are targets for robbers. Be wary of offers of help for flat tyres, particularly on the motorway from Naples to Salern
Only use officially licensed taxis. These will have a taxi sign on the roof. Make sure the meter in the taxi has been reset before you set off.
In 2012 there were 3,650 road deaths in Italy (source: DfT). This equates to 6.0 road deaths per 100,000 of population compared to the UK average of 2.8 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2012.

Men pray on foreign women ; not all men but many. Don’t be scared or worried ; lots of North American women come overseas to live it up so if these men think you’re one of those women, they will ask. Be prepared to hear something along the lines of ” but you’re in Italy, have fun!” if you decline.
Beware of birds overhead! I have seen many a sued jacket and nice up-dos ruined without warning..
lorence’s public washrooms leave much to be desired. Avoid places like Mcdonald’s because you may find a stall with toilet paper and you may find a stall with a locking door but you will never find both
Stay alert while in the cities as theft, bag snatching and breaking into cars is common.
Personal space is a very different thing in Italy. To be clear, it doesn’t exist. When you are waiting in a store, do not be surprised if people stand much closer than you’re used to. If you are walking towards people on the sidewalk they will probably not move. If you don’t move either, you will get a bump in the shoulder. I’ve seen Italians do it to each other so try not to take it personally.
Italians, unlike Americans, do not believe in lines. What you will more likely find in those places where lines typically form is a kind of ambiguous blob. The unspoken rule is whoever is the most clever or most aggressive and gets to the front first, wins.
The culture of “il cliente comanda” (the client dictates / is right) is not present in Italy.

Episodes of violence may occur, sometimes involving bomb attacks by organized criminal or extremist groups.
Be especially vigilant when stopped at traffic lights, as bags are often snatched from passenger seats by thieves travelling on scooters.
Rail passengers have been offered drugged food or drink and been robbed or assaulted while sleeping. Keep your compartment door securely locked
Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings as they can turn violent without notice.
Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. Drugs may be present that could put you at risk of assault and robbery. Incidents of this sort have occurred even in small towns known to be frequented by tourists.
Fraudulent electronic readout devices are being used at automated banking machines (ABMs) in Italy.
City streets are often narrow, winding and congested. Motor scooters and other vehicles are often driven recklessly. Lane markings are frequently non-existent, and traffic lights are limited and often ignored.
Pay attention to your surroundings. Avoid showing signs of affluence and carrying large sums of cash.

Demonstrations and strikes are a common occurrence in Italy. They can cause building closures, particularly in tourist areas, and disruptions to public transport services, including air, shipping, train, bus, tram and taxi services, leading to delays and cancellations
Immigrant workers protesting against working conditions have on occasion sparked violent unrest, demonstrations and riots.
Thieves often work in groups to distract victims and rob them while their attention is diverted.
Theft is particularly common on trains in Italy, including to and from Fiumicino airport near Rome
In major cities, soldiers have been deployed to assist with some policing duties
There are regular pedestrian fatalities throughout Italy. You should exercise particular care when crossing roads, including at controlled pedestrian crossings, as motorists in Italy will often not give way to pedestrians (although they are required to under Italian law).
The standard of medical facilities in Italy's major cities is high, however may be limited in regional areas
