All’uscita dell’iPhone 7 (Nelle varianti “Vanilla” e Plus) abbiamo pubblicato una news riportando come Apple avesse scelto di integrare in questi terminali i Modem LTE sia di Qualcomm sia di Intel, realizzando in totale quattro varianti. Si tratta sicuramente di un evento storico per Intel, in quanto la casa di Cupertino fino a quel momento aveva utilizzato solo i modem di Qualcomm, decisamente più performanti, ma anche più costosi.
Cosa comporta questo per l’utente finale? Prima di tutto i modelli dotati di Modem LTE Intel sono disponibili solo in alcuni mercati. Poiché questi mancano delle tecnologie TD-SCDMA e CDMA EV-DO, richieste rispettivamente in Nord America, Giappone e Cina, i modelli dotati modem Intel sono commercializzati principalmente in Europa (oltre a diverse zone dell’Africa e Mediterranee).
Questa scelta è stata fatta da Apple probabilmente per massimizzare gli utili, in quanto alcune voci di corridoio affermerebbero che Intel starebbe vendendo questi modem a prezzo di costo. Perché integrare negli iPhone europei dei Modem LTE con più funzioni di quelle necessarie?
Non sono però solo alcune funzioni a mancare negli iPhone 7 venduti sul vecchio continente. Le prestazioni dei due Modem LTE, come puntualizzato in questo articolo di Cellular Insights, sono decisamente differenti. Non solo la ricezione del Modem LTE di Qualcomm è migliore, ma anche la bandwidth disponibile risulta molto più elevata. L’autore dell’articolo conclude così: “In all tests, the iPhone 7 Plus with the Qualcomm modem had a significant performance edge over the iPhone 7 Plus with the Intel modem. We are not sure what was the main reason behind Apple’s decision to source two different modem suppliers for the newest iPhone. Considering that the iPhone with the Qualcomm modem is being sold in China, Japan and in the United States only, we can not imagine that modem performance was a deciding factor”.
Anche nei forum delle più importanti testate internazionali alcuni utenti dell’iPhone 7, clienti Apple da anni, sembrano esserne rimasti delusi. Ad esempio l’utente FIVR, sul forum di Anandtech: “I can vouch that my A1778 128GB iPhone 7 has significantly worse reception on 4G and 3G/HSPA in the same areas and at the same times as it had when I had a 6S or when I had a 5S before that. This model was shown to have the Intel XMM7360 modem. I am considering trading it in for a 6S again. Where I used to have strong LTE (4+ bars) I know barely get 3 bars of HSPA and it sometimes drops to EDGE. This intel modem and thus this Apple phone is the worst PHONE I've owned since my iPhone 5S in terms of reception. It may be worse than a 5S”.
