All'XDC2013 di Portland (Oregon, USA) Nvidia annuncia a sorpresa di essere pronta a fornire la documentazione e le specifiche di programmazione delle proprie GPU GeForce per aiutare gli sviluppatori a realizzare driver open source sempre più efficienti.
Con una e-mail di risposta al team dei driver Nouveau, Andy Ritger di Nvidia ha confermato l'iniziativa rilasciando la prima parte della documentazione DCB (Device Control Block) per il VBIOS delle schede grafiche.
Dopo la concessione del materiale relativo ai SoC Tegra, avviata qualche mese fa, questo è un ulteriore segno di apertura e di supporto da parte di Nvidia alla community open source, che siamo sicuri porterà benefici per entrambe le parti.
I ben informati sostengono anche che un annuncio del genere fatto nella settimana in cui Valve introdurrà la fantomatica Steam Box, con il sistema operativo SteamOS appena presentato, non sia del tutto casuale.

NVIDIA is releasing public documentation on certain aspects of our GPUs, with the intent to address areas that impact the out-of-the-box usability of NVIDIA GPUs with Nouveau. We intend to provide more documentation over time, and guidance in additional areas as we are able.
As a first step towards that, we've posted a document here:
that documents the Device Control Block ("DCB") layout in the VBIOS. The DCB describes board topology and the board's display connectors.
I suspect much of the information in that document is not news for the Nouveau community, but hopefully it will be helpful to confirm your understanding or flesh out the implementation of a few unhandled cases.
