After the interesting preview we have seen at Computex 2016 in Taipei, AMD has finally launched its new generation of video cards Radeon RX-series. On the contrary of NVIDIA, the company of Sunnyvale has chosen to target the mainstream market, and in order to support the product has started an aggressive marketing campaign: this campaign bets on good performance/price ratio and on the capability to take advantage of the latest VR gears.
The debut concerns the new two Polaris GPUs, made by Global Foundries with the new 14nm FinFET process: Polaris 10 and Polaris 11. The first one is aimed to target mid-end Desktop market, the second one to target the low-end Desktop market and the Notebook market.
Today debuts the Radeon RX 480 video card, based on Polaris 10 XT GPU, and equipped with 8GB of GDDR5 (The 4GB version will be released during the next weeks). The Polaris 10 XT integrates 36 CUs (2304 SP / 144 TMU), 32 ROPs, a 256 Bit GDDR5 IMC and it offers 5.5 TFLOPs of single precision computing performance. This is the 4th evolutionary step of the GCN uArch, which introduces some new hardware and software features.
As for the costs, AMD suggests for the Italian market a price of 220 Euros for the RX 480 4GB and 262 Euros for the RX 480 8 GB, both including VAT.
Here there are the specs of the reference model of the Radeon RX 480 8GB. Also, the specs of the R9 380X and R9 390.
