As we wrote in this detailed study about future AMD strategies, VR market is still a virgin territory, without a leader (Also, you can read: "AMD must return to the basics").

At the present moment, AMD is trying to be that leader, and the acquisition of Nitero’s IPs goes in this direction: “The acquisition provides AMD with a broader portfolio of IP capable of enabling VR headset and solution providers with key technology required to create more immersive computing experiences”.
VR experience requires a lot of CPU power computing, and the new Ryzen CPUs deliver this power: a lot of fast cores at a budget price. Also, next gen VEGA GPUs are designed to bring enough power to handle VR games without problems.
As said Nitero co-founder and CEO Pat Kelly, “We are excited to play a role in furthering AMD’s long-term technology vision”. AMD want to be the leader of the VR market, and it’s the only hardware company able to provide both CPU and GPU to accomplish this goal.
