Un'ipotesi esotica e conturbante allo stesso tempo, in quanto potrebbe portare ad un terremoto nel campo dell'industria dei semiconduttori, quanto in borsa, quella che descrive Daniel Nenni su SemiWiki: “One of the possible scenarios I see here is that Intel will improve the performance of 14nm (similar to what TSMC did with 16nm and 16FF+) and skip 10nm in favor of accelerating 7nm. This makes complete sense if Intel wants to maintain their process lead against TSMC and Samsung. It also makes sense if Intel wants to continue to cut expenses. Sound reasonable?”.

In effetti, a prima vista sembrerebbe un'ipotesi decisamente realistica, considerata la situazione attuale di Intel, che andremo ad esporre analiticamente nei seguenti punti:

• le FAB Intel a 14nm utilizzate sotto il 50%;
• mercato PC in costante contrazione;
• risicate disponibilità finanziarie;
• i 14nm di Samsung utilizzati già per produrre SoC Mobile in massa;
• i 16nm di TSMC faranno il botto, in termini di ordinativi, nel 2016;
• Samsung e TSMC arriveranno prima di Intel ai 10nm.

Quest'ultimo sarebbe un evento epocale per Intel per tutta l'industria IT, in quanto da oltre 25 anni la casa di Santa Clara è leader indiscussa nel campo dei processi produttivi, dopo la scomparsa di DEC. E' altrettanto vero, però, che attualmente la stessa Intel non può continuare a concorrere in termini di spesa (e l'abbassamento del Capex ne è un segnale) con Samsung e TSMC per aggiornare le priprie FAB. Nenni, quindi, afferma che il CEO di Intel avrebbe una sola scelta: puntare sui 14nm (quasi alla pari, se aggiornati, con i futuri 10nm di Samsung e TSMC in termini di densità e prestazioni), saltare i 10nm e spendere quanto si può per giungere prima delle altre fonderie ai 7nm.

Nenni scrive, in particolare: “To me this is a company culture (ego) and investor thing. When Samsung and TSMC beat Intel to 10nm Intel will be punished in many different ways. Samsung was the first to 14nm SoCs leaving Intel in the dust. Granted Samsung makes the chips and phones so they have an advantage for TTM. But when Samsung and/or TSMC deliver production 10nm Silicon before Intel that will be a very dark day in Intel history and BK may not survive that. Based on what I know about Intel 14nm there is definitely room to improve and get it competitive with the foundry 10nm offerings. Intel could easily juice up 14nm for a minimum cost and make it competitive with TSMC 10nm, putting all of their 10nm resources into 7nm. If I was BK that is what I would do, absolutely”.

Considerata la riduzione di spesa per gli aggiornamenti delle FAB, sarà interessante osservare le mosse di Intel nell'immediato futuro. Le scelte della casa di Santa Clara si fanno sempre più critiche ogni trimestre che passa.
