Clifford Leimbach, ricercatore ed analista presso IHS, ha affermato: “The release of a new Microsoft OS traditionally has been accompanied by more advanced system requirements, which then fuels growth in the DRAM market as more bits are shipped. However, starting with Windows 7 and continuing with Windows 8, Microsoft has taken a leaner approach with its operating systems, maintaining the same DRAM requirements as before. Meanwhile, consumers are continuing to eschew new PC purchases in the fourth quarter, with Windows 8 not expected to change this situation”.

A causa di ciò, molti produttori, tra cui Samsung, probabilmente rallenteranno gli aggiornamenti produttivi, perché le vendite delle Dram non coprirebbero i costi di R&D: “TrendForce, a leading market research company, reports that Samsung, the industry leader of RAM memory, will spent 2013 being highly conservative and will slow down technology migration plans considerably. The majority of companies will face heavy losses in the next calendar year, although TrendForce also believes that the largest suppliers, such as Samsung and SK Hynix, will still be standing when the dust settles”.
