Con l'avvento delle nuove memorie NAND 3D XPoint, realizzate congiuntamente da Intel e Micron ed attese per il 3Q del 2016, il settore degli SSD si sta riscaldando notevolmente. Queste nuove memorie, accreditate di garantire un numero di IOPS oltre sette volte superiore rispetto alle memorie NAND Flash SLC, ed una latenza in lettura fino ad otto volte inferiore, potrebbero determinare un vero e proprio terremoto in questo mercato: "DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, expects that the launch of 3D XPoint products next year will make Intel a strong threat to memory leader Samsung, especially in the high-end SSD market".

Nel primo caso possiamo citare la SuperMLC Technology di Transcend, la quale cerca di unire i pregi delle NAND Flash TLC a quelli delle MLC: "Between Single-Level Cell (SLC) and Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND flash, Transcend has successfully developed SuperMLC technology by reprogramming the two bits per cell of MLC into one bit per cell to greatly boost its performance and endurance, especially in small capacity SSD. The sequential write speed can reach up to 4 times faster than MLC flash chips and provides up to 30,000 times of P/E cycles. SuperMLC technology offers better reliability and endurance than MLC flash chips though this practice halves capacity considering the double occupation of cells for two bits. It is still a good tradeoff for industrial enterprises to obtain superior quality that is nearly equivalent to SLC NAND flash at the most cost-effective price".

Nel secondo caso possiamo citare la volontà di Samsung di velocizzare l'entrata in servizio dei 14nm FinFET per produrre le V-NAND, come riporta Android Headlines: "Samsung plans to enter mass production some time in the first half of 2016. The closest competitor, Hynix, is set to finish up the design on their own 14nm flat NAND chip in 2016 and begin mass production before the end of the year, though no specific dates for either achievement were mentioned. It is, of course, entirely possible that Samsung achieves market dominance for the 14nm NAND segment by the time Hynix hits the market with their own chip. Over time, Samsung’s pattern of consistently leaving competitors in the dust may even begin to push mobile tech as a whole faster than it’s been in recent years".
