There is something in the air. Something that puts a tombstone on Windows RT. Microsoft's Surface 3 comes like a bolt from the blue, debuting with the new Atom X SoC and Windows 8.1, ready for the upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Although this is not a "PRO" version as its sibling, the Surface 3 will share the design, the overall size of 267 x 187 x 8.7 mm and Weight (622g), the same magnesium alloy chassis, the display with a form factor of 3:2 and an adjustable pedestal. The ClearType LCD panel has a diagonal of 10.8" and a resolution of 1920x1280 pixels (FullHD Plus ≈ 214 PPI). The powerhouse is the new Intel's Atom X7-Z8700 SoC, a passive cooled QuadCore @1.6GHz (Turbo @2.4 GHz) + 16-Core iGPU HD Graphics @200/600 MHz (click here for details).

The Surface 3 also offers a front/rear (8Mpx/3.5MPx) camera with AF sensor, Dolby stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS + ГЛОНАСС, optional LTE, a set of sensors (brightness, proximity, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer) and a battery able to guarantee a duration of 10 hours on average use (the capacity has not been specified yet). On the edge of the chassis a full-size USB 3.0 port, a microUSB, a mini-DisplayPort (the iGPU is able to drive up to 3 monitors), a microSD slot and a 3.5mm jack.

Surface 3 is available for pre-order directly on the Microsoft Store - and it will hit the market on the next May 7th, including the Type Cover and Surface Pen (sold separately). Prices will be 609.99 € for the 2GB RAM / 64GB internal memory, and 729.99 € for the 4GB RAM / 128GB internal memory.
