We have wrote about this topic several times, even when AMD was not in the list of TSMC 16nm customers, but now we can say without doubt that both AMD both NVIDIA will produce their own GPU at TSMC on 16nm FinFET node.

Digitimes yesterday wrote: “While securing a portion of Apple's A9 chip orders, TSMC with its 16nm FinFET node has also obtained orders from AMD, Avago, Broadcom, HiSilicon Technologies, LG Electronics, MediaTek, Nvidia and Xilinx. The foundry is looking to aggressively ramp up its market share in the FinFET segment, the sources indicated”.

The 16nm FinFET node of TSMC is actually the only FinFET node available, at Pure-Play foundries, to produce high-performance chips, and because of that AMD could use it to produce the Zen CPUs aimed to fight Intel in the server market (NVIDIA postponed 14nm FinFET GPUs due to Samsung low yelds).

Meanwhile, Qualcomm has abandoned TSMC, due to the poor perfromance of TSMC 20nm SOC, in order to produce its future SoCs at Samsung on 14nm FinFET process: “However, TSMC failed to maintain orders for Qualcomm's flagship mobile chips. Qualcomm has placed orders for its next-generation Snapdragon 820 series with Samsung Electronics, which will use its 14nm FinFET process to manufacture the chips, the sources said”.
