Julie Larson-Green, la quale ricopre la posizione di Executive Vice-President of Devices and Studios presso Microsoft, ha rilasciato un'intervista al quotidiano inglese Guardian, in cui afferma che è auspicabile abbandonare Windows RT: “We have the Windows Phone OS. We have Windows RT and we have full Windows. We're not going to have three”.

Poiché anche Windows 8 è ormai un sistema operativo più votato al mondo mobile (Tablet, convertibili, ecc) che al mercato dei Desktop, Windows RT si propone come una versione speculare ma più povera di questo. Offre un'esperienza d'uso simile, ma al contempo non offre un parco software tanto vasto.

Julie Larson-Green spiega questo l'insuccesso di Windows RT nel fatto che Microsoft non è riuscita a differenziare abbastanza i due sistemi operativi: “So the goal was to deliver two kinds of experiences into the market, the full power of your Windows PC [on the Surface Pro], and the simplicity of a tablet experience that can also be productive. That was the goal. Maybe not enough. I think we didn't explain that super-well. I think we didn't differentiate the devices well enough. They looked similar. Using them is similar. It just didn't do everything that you expected Windows to do. So there's been a lot of talk about it should have been a rebranding. We should not have called it Windows”.

Per questo motivo, Microsoft abbandonerà del tutto Windows RT nel corso del 2014, con buona pace di chia ha aquistato un Surface o un altro Tablet che ne fa uso: “I suspect that there will be no Surface 3 and no successor to the Nokia 2520. Furthermore I am confident that RT will be quietly put to sleep during 2014”.
