The Japanese manufacturer Toshiba has begun the production of the new 15nm eMMC 5.1 NAND memories. This is a LP node with a very high MBT, dedicated to Business and Mobile. Toshiba currently produces 16GB and 32GB versions of these NANDs and, in the near future, 64GB and 128GB models will be available.

The 5.1 eMMC revision has been officially defined by JEDEC on February 2015. There's a number of improvements compared to the previous version:

• Command queuing support;
• Secure Write support;
• BKOPS control;
• Cache Barrier;
• Cache Flushing Report;
• Large RPMB Write.

From now on, even smartphones and tablets will benefit the features found in PCs since several years. The command queuing, for example, was available in SATA disks since the 2007.

Toshiba expects a significant profit increase with the use of the new 15nm process because the design of NAND Flash is always the same (long story short, it is a copy and paste of cells), and it leads to a much better yield than the one achievable with more complex chips such as CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs. The first products based on the new memories should appear during the second half of the 2015 with Apple as a candidate, with a possible iPhone 6c.
